What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
WHOIS is the older text-based protocol for domain registration data, while RDAP is its structured, JSON-based successor that returns standardized, machine-readable results. Many registries now offer both.
What do domain status codes like clientTransferProhibited mean?
These EPP status codes describe locks on a domain. clientTransferProhibited blocks transfers to another registrar, and similar codes prevent deletion or updates, protecting the domain against unauthorized changes.
Why does the expiry date matter?
If a domain is not renewed before its expiry date it can stop resolving and eventually be released for anyone to register. Checking the date lets you renew in time and avoid losing the name.
Can I see who owns a domain behind privacy protection?
Usually not. Privacy or GDPR redaction hides the registrant name and contact details. You can still see the registrar and can send legal or abuse requests through it, but the personal data stays hidden.
