Frequently asked questions

What does the fraction calculator do?

It adds, subtracts, multiplies or divides two fractions and shows the answer simplified to lowest terms, as a mixed number and as a decimal.

How do you add two fractions?

You give the fractions a common denominator, add the numerators, then simplify, and the calculator does this automatically for any two fractions you enter.

How do you multiply fractions?

Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then reduce the result, for example one half times two thirds equals one third.

How do you divide fractions?

You multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second, so dividing by two thirds is the same as multiplying by three halves.

What does simplifying to lowest terms mean?

It means dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor so the fraction uses the smallest whole numbers possible.

What is a mixed number?

A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, such as one and one half, which the tool shows alongside the improper fraction.

Can it convert a fraction to a decimal?

Yes. The result includes the decimal value so you can see, for example, that three quarters equals 0.75.

Does this run in my browser?

Yes. All the arithmetic happens locally in your browser, so your numbers are never uploaded anywhere.
