Sales Tax Calculator
Add or remove sales tax / VAT from a price at any rate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the price by the tax rate divided by 100 to get the tax amount, then add it to the price for the total you pay.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the tax inclusive total by one plus the rate as a decimal, so a 108 dollar total at 8 percent tax comes from a 100 dollar pre-tax price.
What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?
Sales tax is usually added at the final sale in the United States, while VAT is a value added tax common elsewhere, but the math for adding a percentage is the same.
Can I use any tax rate?
Yes. You enter your own rate, so it works for any local, state or national percentage you need to apply.
How much is 8 percent tax on 50 dollars?
Eight percent of 50 dollars is 4 dollars, giving a total of 54 dollars.
Why would I remove tax from a price?
Removing tax is useful when a total already includes it and you need the base price, for example for expense reports or bookkeeping.
Does this calculator know my local tax rate?
No. It does not look up rates automatically, so you enter the rate that applies to your purchase and the tool does the arithmetic.
