Word Counter

Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time.

Frequently asked questions

What does the word counter measure?

Words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, lines and an estimated reading time based on an average reading speed.

How is reading time calculated?

From the word count at roughly 200–230 words per minute, a common average for adult silent reading. It is an estimate, not an exact figure.

Is my text stored?

No. The text is counted and the result returned; nothing is saved.

How does the tool count words with hyphens or apostrophes?

Words are separated by whitespace, so a hyphenated term or a contraction with an apostrophe is generally counted as a single word rather than being split at the punctuation.

What is a good word count for an SEO article?

There is no fixed rule, but in-depth articles often run from 1,000 to 2,000 words. What matters most is covering the topic thoroughly and satisfying the reader intent rather than hitting a specific number.

How many characters can a tweet or meta description have?

A social post on X allows 280 characters for standard accounts, and a search engine meta description is best kept to roughly 150 to 160 characters so it is not truncated in results.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

The with-spaces count includes every space and the without-spaces count omits them. Some publishers and translators bill or budget by one or the other, so both figures are shown.
