Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each letter grade is converted to grade points, multiplied by the credit hours for that course, summed, and divided by the total credit hours to give a weighted average.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA uses a 4.0 scale for every class, while a weighted GPA can go up to 5.0 to give extra credit for honors or advanced courses.

What grade points do letter grades earn?

On the standard 4.0 scale an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0, a D is 1.0 and an F is 0, with plus and minus grades adjusting by a few tenths.

What is a good GPA?

A GPA around 3.0 is often considered solid, 3.5 and above is strong, and 4.0 is a perfect unweighted average, though expectations vary by school and program.

Why do credit hours matter for GPA?

Courses with more credit hours count more toward your average, so a high grade in a four credit class affects your GPA more than the same grade in a one credit class.

Can I calculate GPA for just one semester?

Yes. Enter only that term's courses to get a semester GPA, or include every course to estimate a cumulative GPA.

Is my grade information kept private?

Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and none of your grades or courses are uploaded or stored.
