What information does the IP info tool return?
The reverse DNS (PTR) name plus the IP's autonomous system number (ASN), the network it belongs to, the announcing organisation, the registry (ARIN, RIPE, etc.) and the country.
Where does the ASN and network data come from?
It is looked up over DNS via the Team Cymru IP-to-ASN service. There is no third-party API and nothing is stored.
Is this IP geolocation?
It gives the country and network operator, which is accurate. Street-level IP geolocation is inherently approximate and is not what this tool provides.
What is an ASN?
An Autonomous System Number identifies a network operator that routes IP addresses on the internet using BGP. Every routable IP belongs to an AS, which usually corresponds to an ISP, hosting company or large organization.
What is the difference between ARIN, RIPE and APNIC?
These are Regional Internet Registries that allocate IP addresses and ASNs for different parts of the world: ARIN for North America, RIPE for Europe and the Middle East, APNIC for Asia-Pacific, plus LACNIC and AFRINIC.
Why is the country for an IP sometimes wrong?
IP-to-country data reflects where a block is registered or routed, which may differ from where a device physically sits, especially for VPNs, cloud servers and multinational networks. Treat it as an approximation.
How can I tell if an IP belongs to a hosting provider?
The ASN and network organization usually reveal it. Addresses announced by well-known cloud or hosting companies indicate a server rather than a residential connection, which is useful when assessing traffic.
